Am I really all the things outside of me?

Well today is my first day back to school. As a little kid, it was so important to pick out the best possible outfit for that all-important day. It was the way everyone would remember you forever!

First day of school. Ever.

You know what? I’m totally okay with this. I would wear this outfit right. fucking. now. Check out all that swag!

I’m taking a slightly less neon approach this year. And I’m awfully sad about it, in retrospect.

shirt: vintage, no tags (from antique fest)

jeans: Gloria Vanderbilt

sweater: Gap

High Waisted Jorts!

I have been having a really great summer so far. Taking on a lot of new experiences, pushing my boundaries a little bit socially. And I’ve been having fun getting dressed.

I’m working a little scavenger hunt into my thrifting and garage-saleing this summer. It keeps “work” feeling a little more like “play.” My three Big Win Finds are

1) high waisted pants and or shorts

2) the elusive Perfect Pair of Jorts*

3) Sleeveless Tops (the more side boob, the better)

Today’s find are HIGH WAISTED JORTS.

I bought these last week. I have had an especially hard time finding high-waisted shorts that fit my thighs. I have slim legs and a lot of the leg openings are huuuuuge. This is problem is not so pronounced with these featured jorts because they hit at about mid-thigh and then I roll them up.

I love these because you can wear a super basic top with them. High waisted jorts are statement enough for me thanks!

What are your favorite summer thrift finds?

*I would like to call attention to a point of contention amongst my friends and fellow jorts enthusiasts. Some people believe that perfect jorts can not be BOUGHT but must be MADE, by cutting off cherished jeans. I myself believe in the power of the hemmed jort in addition to the power of the fray.

Funky Flea!

While Syracuse doesn’t have a lot to offer, we do have a couple cool projects going on. One is the Near West Side Intiative (which brought you the “green architecture” post in conjunction with Syracuse University) and several public art initiatives, including the Public Arts Task Force. To be honest, I think a lot of what they do is a little misguided (I live in the near west side, so their art is my reality rather than some theoretical application) but they did sponsor this.

On Saturday, Syracuse held it’s first Funky Flea, modeled after Brooklyn Flea. We DO have a large, sprawling flea market every week but admittedly it doesn’t really have as much of a hipster vibe as this did!

I was happy to go down and support, as the beautiful and talented Mother Midnight team had a fabulous booth as well as my long time friend (and birthday sharer) Marty Butts with his endeavor Small Potatoes Sales & Marketing. I hate to get all sappy here, but I could not be more proud of Marty. PLEASE check out his bloggity blog. I will be linking to it on my blogroll too. I highly recommend the Flour City Pasta (seriously. yummy.) and my friend Hannah LOVED the wasabi pickles.

Mother Midnight was kind enough to let me park behind their booth (there wasn’t really anywhere to tie up your bike!) and they DID NOT SELL IT despite receiving offers. They were also kind enough to package my stuff up nicely while I was out wandering around.

I didn’t really get too much, a couple old pieces of framed art from the ReStore and some Flour City Pasta. But I really enjoyed walking around, meeting people and seeing what everyone had to offer.

I really loved the whole concept, using an abandoned piece of property in what is my favorite part of town to put on a hip little gathering. Can’t beat it. Next time they hold it my friend Aaron (who does print making and other graphic-y things) and I may do a joint booth, for unlimited coolness.

Spring is here!

It is so nice here, it is in the 70’s (spit take!!) so I busted out some shorts.

Like I said, it was actually pretty warm today. I ended up taking the sweater off… I went up to register for school and the campus is very windy. It was perfection.

This belt is from the shop. It is too big for me, but I love the way it looks.

I got this great bag from my aunt. It is a wonderful hand embroidery on burlap. It will probably end up in the shop but right now I am really enjoying it.

Sweater: Target.

Blouse: MotherMidnight (back when they were brick and mortar!).

Shorts: ex-boyfriends pants, cut off. Oh yeah.

Belt: WanderingiVintage.

Shoes: Thrifted.

Bag: Family Heirloom.

a little preview…

I’ve got some exciting stuff in store for Wandering I in the next couple months.

For starters, I am going to be holding a sale in honor of my 26th year on earth. Feb 14-28 I will be offering 26% off everything in the shop. Just use coupon code SWEET26.

My aunt is moving out of the house she has lived in for over 40 years. She is sort of the keeper of artifacts of my father’s side of the family. Her husband died several years ago and she is moving from Tupper Lake to an apartment complex in Syracuse. That means she must reduce the amount of STUFF she has. Which means a lot of it is moving on to me. I’m so excited, because a lot of it is family history I have never had access to before. I have the suitcases my grandfather used, a fur cape embroidered with my grandmother’s name (which is also my name), and a great fur hat so far. Some of it is going in the shop, and some of it will stay with me.

I also have some great finds that will be added to the shop soon as well. Below is a little preview.

Vintage Lunch Outfit Post

I got this great vest thinking, “someone is going to love this piece!” I have a friend Jenny who wears a vest and always looks great. I always wished I was a person who could “pull off” a vest.

I usually go to lunch with my boyfriend once a week, and for some reason (even though he tends to poke a little fun at me about it) I always tend to wear what I would consider semi-daring outfits. Something about showing up in what I see to be a totally knock out vintage outfit. I also tend to wear a little extra make up. (Lipstick? To lunch? There is something so romantic about it.)

scarf: thrifted

Guest Blog Preview

I’m doing a guest blog post for fellow Etsy seller A Wild Tonic. I’m going to be addressing how I curate my shop, how I buy, and where I get it. Pretty awesome. These photos are just a preview! I’ll give you updates on when exactly it will be going up within the next week.

WHILE YOU ARE WAITING, check out my shop (which I have been consistently updating and adding to) and hers, which is pretty rad, I must say.

xoxo

Sweet Scores

well hello!

Another big week here at Wandering I. Colin busted out a surprise logo, which you can see above. It is still in progress a little but what do you think so far??

In other news, it is still snowing. Lief and I got pretty drunk the other night and took a sweet snow walk, that entailed a lot of karate moves that ended with us buried in snow banks.

A note on jeeps: Owning a jeep means never having to dig your car out, but doing it anyway out of respect.

On Wednesday, I drove out to Cazenovia, NY where this great vintage store called Yesterday Market and Boutique is going out of business. I actually know the couple that owns it, as I went to high school with their daughter. I went out to purchase a mannequin for the shop and got pretty caught up in the merchandise. They have been buying for years and have absolutely gorgeous stuff. They clearly have a passion for collecting but they haven’t been able to dedicate the time to keep the shop open (she is a teacher at the local high school).

I’m telling you all this because EVERYTHING in their store is at least half off. They are offering special discounts to other sellers that mention me and for bulk buys. They are also selling their fixtures, including several dress forms, mannequins and display cases.

If you are going out to visit them, call first. They have a lot of high-end pieces (including tons of designer stuff) but a lot of it is in storage and they will get specific stuff out for you if they have some warning.

Even if you are not a seller, but are a local vintage enthusiast, definitely try and make it out. Give them a call if you can’t make it for the posted hours, as they may be able to open for you with an appointment, which is what I had to do. Here are the deets:

Yesterday Market and Boutique
Nelson Corners on Rt. 20, Nelson NY
Big Closing Sale
50% off all inventory
open thru Dec. 26
Fri 10-5; Sat 10-6; Sun 12-5
Period Antiques, Oil Paintings/Prints
Vintage Designer Apparel and Accessories
315-727-6487

Anyway, I purchased a mannequin. I also went to Books and Memories to find some stuff to donate to the Sushi Blues 4th Annual Bentley Memorial Auction that benefits the SPCA. I donated last year, but this year I’m donating as Wandering I Vintage.

I found two sets of cards. The first is a set of 3 Kitten Christmas Cards. The second is  a set of Vaguely Inappropriate Cards for All Occasions.

Alright. I am off to take a ton of pictures and hopefully get a few things listed today. Look for a bunch of new listings over the next few days. If you don’t see them, please assume I’ve died from exhaustion.
