Independence Day

I have taken this weekend to really think about what it means to be American. And the Beats have said it best.

The first poem is one of my favorite of all time. The second, well. I’ll call it “appropriate.”

I Am Waiting

By Lawrence Ferlinghetti

I am waiting for my case to come up
and I am waiting
for a rebirth of wonder
and I am waiting for someone
to really discover America
and wail
and I am waiting
for the discovery
Of a new symbolic western frontier
and I am waiting
for the American Eagle
to really spread its wings
and straighten up and fly right
and I am waiting for the Age of Anxiety
to drop dead
and I am waiting
for the war to be fought
which will make the world safe
for anarchy
and I am waiting for the final withering away
of all governments
and I am perpetually awaiting
a rebirth of wonder

I am waiting for the second coming
And I am waiting
For a religious revival
To sweep thru the state of Arizona
And I am waiting
For the grapes of wrath to stored
And I am waiting
For them to prove
That God is really American
And I am waiting
To see God on television
Piped into church altars
If they can find
The right channel
To tune it in on
And I am waiting
for the last supper to be served again
and a strange new appetizer
and I am perpetually awaiting
a rebirth of wonder

I am waiting for my number to be called
and I am waiting
for the Salvation Army to take over
and I am waiting
for the meek to be blessed
and inherit the earth
without taxes
and I am waiting
for forests and animals
to reclaim the earth as theirs
and I am waiting
for a way to be devised
to destroy all nationalisms
without killing anybody
and I am waiting
for linnets and planets to fall like rain
and I am waiting for lovers and weepers
to lie down together again
in a new rebirth of wonder

I am waiting for the great divide to be crossed
and I anxiously waiting
For the secret of eternal life to be discovered
By an obscure practitioner
and I am waiting
for the storms of life
to be over
and I am waiting to set sail for happiness
and I am waiting
for a reconstructed Mayflower
to reach America
with its picture story and TV rights
sold in advance to the natives
and I am waiting
for the lost music to sound again
in the Lost Continent
in a new rebirth of wonder

I am waiting for the day
that maketh all things clear
and I am waiting for retribution
for what America did to Tom Sawyer
and I am waiting
for the American Boy
to take off Beauty's clothes
and get on top of her
and I am waiting
for Alice in Wonderland
to retransmit to me
her total dream of innocence
and I am waiting
for Childe Roland to come
to the final darkest tower
and I am waiting for Aphrodite
to grow live arms
at a final disarmament conference
in a new rebirth of wonder

I am waiting
to get some intimations
of immortality
by recollecting my early childhood
and I am waiting
for the green mornings to come again
for some strains of unpremeditated art
to shake my typewriter
and I am waiting to write
the great indelible poem
and I am waiting
for the last long rapture
and I am perpetually waiting
for the fleeting lovers on the Grecian Urn
to catch each other at last
and embrace
and I am awaiting
perpetually and forever
a renaissance of wonder

I love these. I probably shouldn’t because Charlie Sheen is obviously ill, but kittens make everything enjoyable.

Dior, I desire you.

*John Galliano’s Christian Dior haute couture collection. Fucking gorgeous.*

That yellow one? If I ever get married, you had better believe my dress going to look an awful lot like that, but probably a nice pewter grey.

Christmas

This Christmas was a little bit different. I had to work Christmas Eve and Christmas night, so that severely limited my holiday spirit and options. I went to Lief’s family’s house Christmas morning for a few hours and experienced  what a “large family” christmas was like. Lief also made us a set of swords and a new table for the house.

I went out to my parents house on Sunday for a little informal lunch. I got some Battlestar Galactica books (including The Science of Battlestar Galactica, which combines Battlestar and physics in the most perfect way), and a few other things. My dad got me a really cool fortune cookie change purse also.

JUST A REMINDER:

I am running a 25% off sale in the shop until 1.1.11

“If I was your boyfriend, I would have loaded this album on your ipod without you even asking. You would have just been at the gym and looking through it and you would find all of these albums that I knew you wanted and put on there for you.”

This is not real, is it? Is this even an option? I’ve woven all of these imaginary lives, where all of these imaginary things happen.

In reality, the most thoughtful thing anyone has done for me recently is Nancy Cushing giving me two Fresca’s when I asked for one. I tried to give the second back and she said, look, put that in your car. You’re gonna get drunk and you’re gonna forget about it and when you leave the hotel tomorrow all hung over and get into your car, that Fresca is going to be the best thing ever.

And, she was right.

Christmas gratuity

I have a lot of blogging to catch up on here!

I have been SUPER BUSY and overwhelmed the last week and a half. After 8 days straight of waitressing, my feet are KILLING me. I have to give major props here to my very favorite shoes, which I wear often at work and to the gym. I am not ashamed to say I effing love my AirMax Turbulences. NIKE: I AM PLUGGING YOU. PLEASE SEND ME A NEW PAIR OF ALL BLACK IN 8.5. THANKS. Seriously though, I’m sad that The Rent Is Too Damn High guy didn’t win cause I would marry those shoes for sure.

Also, I want to give mad props to Lief (again, he is just the greatest). I often get like, straight up drunk sobbing depressed reading late night tweets from beautiful women with amazing shops and families chatting with each other about dinners their wonderful menfolk have cooked for them and posting pictures of beautiful babies they have made together.

I don’t have any of that. But I have Lief. And even though he usually wakes me up really early in the morning, he also provides unflagging support, repairs my car, brings me coffee in the morning, grabs me fresca when he’s going by the fridge, and shovels the driveway. He also builds incredible furniture, woos my coworkers and has never met a jukebox he couldn’t coax an excellent 90’s play list out of. Thanks Lief. (This message brought to you by the Freedom of Espresso coffee I’m holding. He goes there for the sexy ladies.)

I am also grateful for the opportunity to participate in the 4th annual Bentley Memorial auction to Benetifit the Chenango County CSPCA. Sushi Blues has many talented loyal customers and everyone really comes together every year and donates their skills, talents, time and ability to make sure the auction is a success. Even our staff participates! This is my second year donating and working. Last year I knit a gorgeous olive scarf out of vintage yarn with copper bead edging. This year I donated a set of vintage beefcake birthday cards.

Anyway, This was our best year ever. We raised over $3800 for shelter animals! *high five*.

Last, but certainly not least. I am incredibly grateful for my friends Andy, Erica and Colin. We have only become friends fairly recently, but they are pretty awesome. They are super supportive of me (check out my sweet logo/twitter theme/background etc. that Colin designed me!) and possibly, with Lief, my biggest fans. I hope I can reciprocate in kind.

Here is a preview of some stuff I will be adding to the shop today:

snow day!

Today was exactly the kind of day that I love. Big globs of snow falling, marshmallowy snow drifts, shovelling the driveway and brushing snow off the car.

My fellow Syracusians are already digusted with me but here it is, I FUCKING LOVE THE WINTER!

I have a gorgeous vintage iron bed frame with a nice comfy bed and in the winter I get to put my on down comforter, heavy velvet quilt and an extra blanket and snuggle with the cats.

Best EVER.

busy day.

I had big plans for today, tons of pictures to take, lots of listing, a little shopping perhaps for the SPCA auction that I’m donating to/working at/helping to organize, and a major apartment cleaning.

But Lief, domestic life partner extraordinaire got off work early (8am) and woke me up to tell me that we were replacing my windshield wiper motor that has been bad in my car for like, months.

We drove to the north side of the city to pick up the part, where the parts guys talked only to Lief even though I was the one with the part info. They even handed the reciept to him after I paid them! Blerg… Sexism. Luckily I read all sorts of jeep forums and have a factory repair manual so I know exactly what I need and how to talk about it, if anyone is willing to hear me out.

On top of that, they gave me the wrong effing part. I waited around for a couple hours for them to get back to me wether or not they had the correct part in stock, although we were already an hour away from the store. We ended up just splicing and soldering the correct parts on from the old motor, but it was a monumental pain in the ass.

So I got home around 4:30 (basically 8pm in terms of light these days) and shoveled about a foot of snow from the driveway.

Then I had to do a bunch of errands and ship some orders. At the post offive I dropped my phone and shattered the screen. Perfect. I don’t have insurance.

Blerg.

So, I got nothing done but I did get my car fixed.

Meh.

I watched “Get Him to the Greek” and it was pretty disappointing. I am disappointed.

There is an effing blizzard outside. Secretly, I loooooove it.

I  have been so busy the last couple days!

I work 4 days a week at a Korean/Japanese resturant, I work an additional day or two at another sushi resturant, and then in addition to that, I have been putting a lot of time into Wandering I. I feel like all I do is work and gym, and I haven’t even had time to go to the gym the last few days!

I know it will be worth it, but it is exhausting.

I officially opened the shop Dec. 2nd and I feel like a lot of the work I’ve done is paying off already. I have sold two things and I have a few hearts. It is pretty exciting.

I have to give Lief some major props here. He has been a big help EVEN THOUGH HE HAS BEEN SICK. Lief, I promise I will give the house a good cleaning tomorrow. Here he is, the new american classic:

I have listed a bunch of stuff, and have lots more coming in the next two days. Here is a preview:
